Rachel Maddow on Obama Throwing Gays Under the Bus...

I'm really glad I'm not going to the inauguration anymore (though it might have been nice to do some protesting). I'm saddened and enraged and I'm not listening to one more word of that lying fake's goddamn audiobook.
Obama had the GALL to defend his choice of a hateful fundamentalist bigot who compares being gay to pedophilia and bestiality by talking about "diversity", "inclusivity" and "the magic of this country" or some nonsense. Really? REALLY? It's MAGICAL and INCLUSIVE to give a prominent role in your inaugural ceremony to a hatemongering misogynist bigot? This quote is priceless--and scary, as he indicates that the makeup of his inaugural is a foreshadowing of how he plans to govern:
That's part of the magic of this country, is that we are diverse and noisy and opinionated,” he added. “That's the spirit in which, you know, we have put together what I think will be a terrific inauguration. And that's, hopefully, going to be a spirit that carries over into my administration.”
Rick Warren doesn't just have nice little opinions he shares in a nice respectful way. Rick Warren was a MAJOR force in a successful campaign to discriminate against millions of Americans (Prop 8, obviously).
Also, Obama has the gall to claim he's still a "fierce" advocate of gay equality--apparently extending to allowing a gay marching band to participate in the festivities.
Where was his inclusivity and magic and diversity and fierce advocacy when he decided NOT to appoint any openly LGBT people to a cabinet or staff post in his administration?
Are any of you still full of Obama hopes and dreams? Hell, he hasn't even STARTED yet and I'm already sick to my stomach with Clinton deja vu.
Hate is not magical. Much much more analysis, links and so forth on this topic on Pam's House Blend.
Hope and change, my ass.

Thank you so much for this!! I love Rachel so much--she always says EXACTLY what I'm thinking!
I don't happen to be gay, but I'm still fucking pissed. At first I was just a little confused, like what the hell does he have to gain? O that's right! He wants to please the fucking right wing bigots and say "Look at me! Screw those gays! I like this bigot too!"
He's already throwing us lefties under the bus and isn't even in office yet.
I'm more pissed every ten minutes. I may fall over......
Check out my blog, you may like it xoxo
Something I haven't heard anyone say: Rick Warren used Obama's support of "traditional" marriage in a video to his supporters to show that their views were mainstream and across the political spectrum--and a reason why they should vote for Prop 8.
Essentially, Obama was used by the right-wing to paint gay rights as radical and fringe.
you're right, Matt. Actually, I have heard a bunch of people say that, and I think Maddow mentions it in that piece... the ads used clips of Obama talking about how he is opposed to same-sex marriage, even though he was technically against Prop 8.
So... according to you guys, Obama picked Warren to be at his inaguration because he want to "cater to right wing bigots."
Did you ever stop to consider that maybe Barack made a boneheaded decision without being coerced by outside forces? He already showed poor judgement in appointing so many Clinton cronies to his cabinet, keeping Gates on as Sec. of Defense, and even before his election by supporting FISA and the bullshit bailout.
I assure you all, we're all in for another four years of screw-ups.
It's not just gays. Anyone who considers themselves progressive should be offended and disgusted at Barack Obama's homophobia. That's right--Barack Obama's homophobia.
People who don't hate gays don't give important honors to those who do.
i like some of what you say, but i think you're way over the top most of the time.
people needn't agree 100 percent of the time. it's better when people who disagree on fundamental issues can relate on a basic human level.
you're too extreme for me. but i'll keep reading your blog, because passion is rare. i still think you should lighten up.
